After one year and three months of living in Vegas I finally made it down to the Hoover Dam. On a Sunday. A holiday weekend. We’re retarded.
I’m all for tours and museums and all that jazz. There’s nothing I’d rather do than go back to D.C. and just walk around the Smithsonians for a couple days. In fact, I’m gonna talk the wide into that one soon. But, even I was bored with the Hoover Dam tour. Good information, cool subject; horrible execution.
And, as I first thought about it I was pretty disappointed. Then I took a step back to see that there were at least several thousand tourists trying to make their way down into the bowels of that old dam. These aren’t nice “We’re from out of town and visiting our Aunt Lilly” tourists, these are the “Where is the goddamn concierge??? I wanted 5,000 green M&M’s in my fucking bathroom!!!!” tourists. So I can see their problem, it’s a little too jammed for an in depth tour. Fine. I guess I’ll just go admire the art.
Whaaa?? Art? Yep, I never would have guessed that some of my all time favorite architectural pieces would be attached to a giant dam. The etching in the dam itself and the area around it is gorgeous. It was all done in the early 30’s (I assume, it wasn’t covered in the tour… go figure) in the classic art deco style. Although, it was very harsh, where some deco feels very forced and overly warm this felt like it was carved from solid granite. It’s concrete, but still it looked like it wanted to come off the walls and start directing work groups. This was very tough art.
I know that I want to go back without the kids at some point. It’s hard to take pictures of things when you have to make sure no one’s trying to play in the street.

So they’re in the mail. I spent the other night completing the second full application (actually a set of two) I’ve made to the FAA. The first one (again, there was actually two) won me the chance to send more applications. It’s a little confusing. Anyway, I’m being considered for a […]
I’ve been in search of a decent RSS reader for the last month and a half. The problem is that I’m not willing to pay $20 - $30 for an RSS reader, but I’m not willing to compromise on quality either. Of course this puts one in an odd spot. You could […]
Doesn’t it look like that shot came from an incredibly well rendered video game? It’s just so perfect and pristine down there. You’d never know that it’s a working power plant supplying Arizona and Los Angeles.
